At my last backstage interview session last week, I was privy to the hauntingly ethereal stylings at Doo.Ri, which featured a gunmetal gray, filled in brow and a matte, baby blue lip. Key makeup artist for MAC for the show, Tom Pecheux, had explained that after the success of using a gray lip on models last season, he had decided to update the look for a fresher, more whimsical hue for spring. And after the past few days on the London runway, it seems the curious idea has caught on. In addition to the signature spring lip colors of red, pink and berry, a few snatches of a more unorthodox palette were seen at the likes of London shows Paul Smith and House of Holland. The latter showed off pouts painted in cobalt, tomato red, and a shot of dark lavender. Holland has dabbled in off kilter colors before so the stark shades were not as much of a surprise as they were at Chez Paul Smith, who implemented bright orange, watery green, and a similar shade of baby blue as seen at Doo.Ri. Although beauty critics across the board think these wild hues are best left to the cat walk, a more toned-down version could be easily concocted (try pigments for that vibrant straight shot of color) for a glamorous night on the town.
