Last night held one of the highlights of London Fashion Week and the city's 25th anniversary of the annual event: the return of the Burberry show. As akin to British culture as clotted cream and scones, the Burberry trench-entrenched collection brought out celebrities in droves, from both sides of the pond. Mario Testino sat next to the label's latest poster girl—and newly minted American college student—Emma Watson in the show's front row. Gwyneth Paltrow came out to support Burberry's creative director, Christopher Bailey and show her allegiance to the fashion scene of her home away from home, calling London, "My hometown — during the school year at least." Victoria Beckham, a Paltrow in reverse, had only a brief period to fly back to her new home of L.A. following her presentation at New York Fashion Week. She said that after a quick check on her smoldering hubby and the kids she hopped another plane over to London in time for the British Vogue dinner and Burberry show.
Other American guests, like Stephanie Solomon, vice president and fashion director of
Bloomingdale's, came into town just for the show, which was held at
the Chelsea College of Art and Design and for the after party, held at
Burberry's new headquarters nearby. Other well known names who turned out to support Bailey and his label included Liv Tyler, Natalie Massenet, Freida Pinto, Dev Patel, Mary-Kate Olsen, David Walliams, Samantha Cameron and Agyness Deyn—more A-listers at one show since, according to WWD, Giorgio Armani's Emporio Armani show three years ago. And it seemed that for most, the trek was worth it. "There was a lot I could totally see myself wearing," said Freida Pinto.
"Especially all the pastels." Mary-Kate Olsen loved Bailey's lightness of touch and the clarity of his passion. "I love that he shows so much enthusiasm. That's what
it's ll about," she said.
