Celebrities are always wearing statement pieces that set them apart (especially since that one piece is usually worth more than my entire wardrobe for the season combined!) Let’s take a look at the luxurious statement pieces celebs are tossing over their backs, across their hips and over their legs, this fall.

The Military Jacket

When you think of the structured, brass-buttoned military jacket that overpowered the Fall 2009 fashion shows, two names immediately come to mind: Michael Jackson and Balmain. With the untimely death of singer Michael Jackson, his kicked up military coats with sequined color, embellishments and heavy detailing took center stage paying homage to the flashy singer who was gone too soon.

But Balmain had already taken notice, littering his fall runways with the high-fashion, high-statement architectural trend piece complete with bulky structured shoulders and luxe tailoring. Celebs came running and suddenly, everyone was wearing one from Mischa Barton in her lavish military/Grecian look complete with military-inspired coat, sequined gold top and flowy white to Rihanna, who overpowered her petite top half with Balmain’s military-inspired denim jacket. But it was Beyonce, who seriously took our breath away, flaunting her curvy physique for a night on the town with husband Jay-Z in a crystal-embellished silver-sequined Balmain military jacket worth a whopping $11,410.

The military jacket is the centerpiece, so make sure you play the rest of the outfit down, forgoing prints and overly-girly textures for solid colors and jeans. Is Balmain too much for the taking? Marc Jacobs makes a more demure admiral coat in navy cotton moleskin. Throw it over a white tank and jeans and you’re good to go.

The Statement Shoe

As the weather turns colder, the gladiator booties are slowly being replaced, but their sculpted nature is not being replaced. Trade your peep toes for pumps, round-toes and ankle boots but keep up the straps, caging and embellishments. Celebs are doing this trend quite well right now.

Recently, Nicole Richie dressed up her everyday bohemian look with some caged booties that made her stand out as always. French Vogue editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld (who’s also as big a face as Miss Anna Wintour herself) chose to perk up her tweed skirt suit and cashmere sweater with structured gray booties and a well-placed one toe showing at the Christian Dior Spring ’10 show in Paris while Juno star Ellen Page is quickly shedding her tomboy image and opting for the ultimate fashionista look with her Alexander Wang dress, David Yurman necklace and high-fashion architectural Rachel Comey Cavat Boots. She isn’t losing her rock star appeal. And who can forget Shakira’s ankle cuff round toe platforms. She wears them well with a black-and-white floral minidress and large buckled belt.

Christian Louboutin offers a covered heel and a demure, yet utterly fashionable appeal including that signature Louboutin red leather sole we all know and love. The hand crafted pair may look subtle from afar, but the detail makes it all the more sculpted and chic.

Evening Shorts

Shorts don’t need to be put away just yet, simply trade them for dressier looks and warmer fabrics and you’re good to go. Evening shorts were all over Fall ’09 and Spring ’10 runways and celebs are not shy about flaunting them ferociously.

If you’re going to choose an evening fabric, go for satin, lame, wool or leather. You can’t go wrong in a great leather short short or trouser shorts in tailored wool. To round out the fall season, pair them with a pair of footless tights or leggings in a wild color like purple or dark red.

The always fashionable Whitney Port put together two different textures for an evening look. She paired a gray sweater with leather shorts, a white bag, and ever so stylish animal print booties. Meanwhile, her high-fashion counterpart and new Elle staff member Olivia Palermo wore a dressy boucle short in muted pattern for the H&M launch of Matthew Williamson’s line. These Stone Embellished Boucle Dion Shorts are mighty cheap at only $40 and you can make the look even more night time by adding a thick pair of opaque tights and snazzy heels.

Guess we’ll keep the reality star/newbie designer thing going and comment on Lauren Conrad’s posh pleated silk shorts from Alex Lane. The sheer, white almost see-through top with light brushstrokes added some oomph to the outfit.

Whether it’s pleats in the front, or high-waist, evening shorts are very chic. You can get a little of both with this Charlotte Ronson pair with slant front pockets and fold detail at the waistband. Oh and did we mention they’re leather?!
