Cuts At Conde Nast Continue To Unfold

October 7, 2009 • Fashion

In the wake of the shocking news that publishing titan Conde Nast was shuttering four of its mags—Gourmet (tears, we cried real tears), Cookie, Elegant Bride, and Modern Bride—cutbacks are still surfacing this week. Every Conde Nast editor had been asked prior to Fashion Week season to cut his or her budget by 25%, with the new plans slated to be finished this Friday. On the edge of the Paris runways, those plans were already translating as first rows looked surprisingly bare. Top editors Julie Gilhart, Cecilia Dean, and Joanna Coles have all been noticeably absent, and even Anna Wintour has been a phantom around Paris, spotted at very few shows. According to Fashion Week Daily, hours between the shows are now filled with budget related conference calls and meetings and many editors have been missing shows while dealing with the pressing issues of cutback plans and more layoffs.

Meanwhile, back at home, it was just announced today that Steven Deluca, publisher of the magazine Details since April 2008, was laid off as
the men’s title was moved under the purview of senior vice president
and publishing director Bill Wackermann. Deluca was notified late Monday afternoon he was being let go. His departure will end the rumors that Details would be next on the Conde Nast chopping block. Although Details has suffered severe ad page losses this year (it fell 34 percent) along with most of the other Conde Nast publications, new publishing director Wackermann says that he is confident there is a place for Details in the Conde Nast future due to its younger target demographic and "edgier, editorial voice." He also said editor in chief Dan Peres was the right man to guide the
magazine into 2010. “I am honored to be involved with Details again,
and the opportunity to work with Dan Peres," Wackermann told WWD. "The market needs Details’
edgy and smart edit. There is nothing else like it.”
