There is finally some good news for the magazine industry, although it's somewhat like getting excited over the only ray of sunshine through the clouds. As of the end of the third quarter, though magazine foldings are still outnumbering magazine launches, the number of foldings has decreased from the previous two years.
In 2007, 643 magazines closed publication with the number falling to 613 in 2008. So far, despite the big-name foldings of the likes of Gourmet and Cookie, only 383 magazines have folded, a large drop even though there still is the fourth quarter to get through.
Luckily, 259 magazines have also been launched this year, most in the Regional, Food, Health & Fitness, and home categories. There were also 75 new B to B magazines launched.
Things are, very slowly, looking up.
