After a spokeswoman for Christian Louboutin claimed the legendary shoe designer considered the dimensions of Barbie's ankles to be too "too fat," the latest chapter in Barbiegate began. The comment was revealed with the announcement last week that Louboutin would be stylizing three new versions of Barbie herself, scheduled to be released over the next several months. Louboutin had already formed a relationship with Mattel and its iconic bombshell of a doll by designing special edition Barbie shoes in honor her 50th anniversary earlier this year. Having fostered such a close and personal relationship with the doll (even calling himself Barbie's "godfather"), Louboutin was scandalized by the fact that such a comment would be made on his behalf.
The designer quickly took steps toward righting the situation by explaining to WWD on Friday what his actual thoughts on the crucial topic were: "Barbie’s foot has always been shaped less ‘curvy’ than the rest of
her perfect body,” he said. "I just added my little science to Barbie
and I’ve been proud to serve her. But fat ankles she didn’t have, she
just could have had thinner ankles. That’s all." He added, "My God, what a story,” on the controversy. "I
apologize to my goddaughter. There has been a bit of confusion
there, but it’s just the proof that Barbie has real serious fans." Like any good goddaughter, we're quite sure Barbie will forgive you.
