Smart Shopping For Winter

The other day I came across my fall shopping list that I had composed back in August. I was pleasantly surprised that I could check off each item, which means that, for once, I had been focused in my shopping. My list wasn’t exactly the top fall trends from a fashion magazine: there were no harem pants, jumpsuits or satin shorts, but instead, basic pieces like suede pumps and chunky sweaters that will help me build a solid winter wardrobe.

Any fashionista knows what a struggle it is to not get distracted when shopping (i.e. Do I really need that faux fur vest? Wouldn’t my money be better spent on a practical pair of skinny black pants?), so I hope some of my must-haves help you.

Long-sleeve Dress
There’s nothing more versatile than a long-sleeve black dress. Try to find one that is professional, yet sleek enough to go from day to night. The possibilities really are endless with this Adam long sleeve dress with seam detail ($395 at Pair with tights and heels or tall boots, add a long or short cardigan and dress it up with a fun bib necklace.

Chunky Knits
If there’s one look that’s big, and I mean really big this season, it’s the chunky sweater. Whether it’s a wool turtleneck or a fair isle cardigan, just make sure they’re thick and full of texture. Because we can’t all afford a beautiful Stella McCartney oversized chunky knit cape ($1,695 at, you could opt instead for Rebecca Taylor’s Inside/Outside cardigan ($525 at, a less expensive yet still luxe version.

Party Dress
I’m such a sucker for the little party dress and fortunately, I’ll allow myself to purchase one to get me through all the season’s holiday parties. Moschino Cheap and Chic’s sleeveless dress ($895 at is seriously unique and has definite staying power. I love the ribbed sateen texture with gross grain banding and hip pockets.

In the accessories department, I can’t think of a more stylish bracelet than this woven bracelet by Landver ($55 at It’s an updated take on the chain link with a multi-strand metallic leather wrap deal that gives it a modern edge. I love how Piperlime continues expanding its offering – the site now has a great jewelry selection, and I have my eye on the GS Lillian Medium Diamond Cuff ($68 at

Going into fall, I knew I wanted a pair of substantial suede pumps that I could pair with skinny pants, and black tights with dresses or skirts. While the pair I ended up with is a sweet shade of eggplant, I also like Pour La Victoire’s “Sheila” pump in taupe leather ($195 at Its three-inch heel is a versatile height and the color will go with anything.
