Online auction giant eBay was fined 1.7 million euros (about $2.6 million dollars) for failing to prevent the trade of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA's fragrances and cosmetics on its French website.
This is nothing new. This battle has been ongoing since June 2008 when eBay was found to have violated an injunction, banning users from buying or selling LVMH fragrance products anywhere in the world, regardless if the item was just new and unopened or counterfeit.
Users of eBay were subjected to a filtering software to check but still found a way to get around them. 1,300 listings still managed to appear on the French site by users who deliberately misspelled names and/or only posted pictures.
Users of the auction site in France have been blocked from selling or buying LVMH fragrances and cosmetics because their distribution is allowed through authorized specialist dealers.
