One of Chicago's breakthrough new clothing lines, Shorty Clothing, held an exclusive viewing of its holiday collection last night at the swanky Film Exchange Lofts. Launched at GenArt in 2008, Shorty Clothing aims to create effortlessly glamorous pieces for the busy urban women. Local designers Janna Boyd and Sophie Lin pull inspiration from vintage eras, pop culture styles, and their own heritage to form collections brimming with chic and versatile pieces. Their holiday collection, titled Rock Meets Rococo, fuses the ideas of a Parisian, Marie Antoinette-like aesthetic with a edgier, rock n' roll vibe. Pieces in decadent velvet, satin, and cotton jacquard were cut into on-trend shapes like miniskirts and cropped blazers. Metallic silk lent a funky and modernistic vibe to romantic silhouettes while ethereal, ruffled shapes were anchored with edgy hardware. And as a nod to the growing trend of sustainable fashion, new versions of former designs were unveiled in eco-friendly fabrics like bamboo.
The wear-ability in the the newest collection lay in the apparent comfort of the pieces, many of which included a fun, waist-shrinking self-belt. The Penelope romper, one of the collection's most popular pieces, was created from French fleece and provides hip but comfortable alternative to frumpier casual wear.
Each Rock Meets Rococo piece carried its own sense of drama, such as the golden Grand Dame coat, but retained a consistently luxurious feel throughout the collection. As a new addition for the season, the line has just included a selection of accessories as well, a few luxe scarves and handpicked baubles that provide an extra dose of polish to the stylish pieces.
Head designers Janna and Sophie, along with the company's CEO Catherine Hudon, recently created a killer multimedia presentation and digital fashion show of the Rock Meets Rococo line, now available to view on the label's website.
