Some people think it's time to start saving the crocs, and no, we're not referring to the shoes. Sportswear label Lacoste has just announced they will will spend $500,000 over the next three years to help preserve endangered crocodiles. This seems somewhat of a different take from luxury label Hermes, who proudly told us last summer that they had stated crocodile breeding farms, in order to supply their devoted following with state of the art, reptile bags.
Lacoste was convinced to sign on to the charitable initiative by Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and the International
Union for Conservation of Nature who run the "Save Your Logo
Initiative." Lacoste is the first fashion company to sign on to what the sponsors are hoping will become a full blown effort. “We hope to be able to give back to our iconic crocodile — to whom we
owe so much — a small part of what he has brought us,” Lacoste
president Michael said. “Seventy-five years ago, we were the
first company to embroider a logo on apparel, and now we are the first
company to support ‘Save Your Logo.’”
Much of Lacoste's croc-saving efforts will concentrate on the Gange
gharialcrocodile, of which only 1,400 are estimated to remain in the
wild. Good luck to them in their preservation efforts!
