During Thursday's fourth quarter announcements, Urban Outfitters Inc. unveiled and revealed that its sixth brand will include bridal dresses. Though they will be initially sold on its website, the gowns will strive to be sold in stores.
Urban Outfitters has been very profitable lately. With a 91.6 percent increase in net income and a 15.8 percent increase in sales, it would be hard to argue with a company that focuses on being "urban, gritty and street-hip" wants to branch out into the $60 billion industry of bridalwear.
The average cost of a wedding is $45,000 with a clothing budget running about $4,500, said CEO Glen Senk. The gowns, made under the Anthropologie label, will run from $1,000 to $5,000. Senk goes on to continue that the attire will be "heirlooms, to be passed on from one generation to the next."
Yes, because I'm sure my children will want a wedding gown from the same place that sells skinny jeans and motorcycle gloves. Classy.
