Friday night Sephora on State Street held a pre-opening event to showcase its new products and guest experts like hair guru Kyan Douglas and national makeup artist Emily Massa. The décor was as bright as the makeup and as enthusiastic as the crowd.
The intense atmosphere was every woman's dream: a seemingly endless supply of makeup, fragrances, skin and hair care and a team to help choose what’s best for you! If you were stressing at all, even though that was highly impossible, there was a woman floating around spraying a face and makeup refresher! As I said before, it was every woman’s dream!

Kyan Douglas, of the Emmy-award winning hit television show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” was there to promote HerCut, haircare for your haircut.
SCS: What’s HerCut all about?
KD: All haircuts are based off five cuts that the hairdressers have to master—the bob, long layers, the shag, the blunt and the pixie—but there are many variations with the creativity level that goes into each cut.
We’ve created five different styling catalysts that make your hair behave the way it was cut to behave. What’s happening with your haircut is the hairdresser is using very specific tools and specific techniques which make the hair behave a certain way. All five formulas help extenuate the action or the behavior of the cut.
Let’s face it, we all love our cuts in the salon, these formulas help you recreate that first day salon performance at home.
SCS: What do you look at when deciding what cut someone should get?
KD: The basic idea in haircutting is to choose a cut that extenuates what works and usually what that means is finding a cut that balances any outstanding, dominant facial feature.
For example, a round or long, oval face should wear a bob cut because the straight lines you get from the bob counter balance the round face shape. The perfect face shape is a diamond shape because the ratio between the angles of your face are proportional from how long it is to how wide it is. The diamond shape face can wear any haircut.
SCS: What’s the best way to apply the product?
KD: Shampoo and condition with the HerCut products then towel dry your hair. Choose the catalyst that best matches your cut, begin to apply a third of the way down from your roots, work your way down and then go back to the roots. The formulas use molecules and ions that react together to allow the hair to not feel heavy.
SCS: How is HerCut different from what’s already out there?
KD: There aren’t products out there that work directly with each specific cut of the hair. When you leave the salon at the end of the day, you love the cut itself.
I asked him for any pointers on my haircut and he said he wouldn’t change a thing and loves my layers! I need to go thank my hairdresser!
Sephora PRO Beauty Team Member and national makeup artist, Emily Massa, was next to revolutionize my world of makeup. She danced all over the store excitedly finding all the right shades and brands to paint on my face, then we sat down and the work began!
Massa was easily one of the nicest people I’ve ever met! Her bubbly personality made me feel like I was at my girlfriends place getting ready to go out. She introduced me to her proud parents and all three were cracking jokes and enjoying the night as much as I was.
