One of the best things about fall and winter are all the amazing boots – this past season was especially nice for boot connoisseurs, with everything from sweet little ankle booties to aggressive over-the-knee styles on hand. However, the start of spring usually means it’s time to put away all your favorite pairs until next autumn. But this year is another story – there are plenty of styles that will work with lighter spring looks that you’ll be able to wear until it’s time for nothing but sandals.

There are few keys to rocking the springtime boots:

Light colors – As much as you might you might love your favorite black boots, they will probably look harsh against spring clothes. Try cognac or dove gray hues instead, even with pieces that you’d normally wear with black. The softer shades suit lighter weight fabrics, like these Frye cowboy boots.

Open toes – Ever wondered when open-toed boots are appropriate? March, April, and May are the perfect time to show off your pedicure in your favorite boots, since the weather is still cool enough to be boot-worthy but it is warm enough that you’re not risking frostbite. These Alexander McQueen (RIP) boots would be stunning with jewel toned spring outfits.

Delicate Touches – Feminine, ruffled, and other sweet touches tend to work well with rugged boots. A pretty, floaty blouse like this one by Quiksilver would be perfect with your favorite boots and some skinny jeans.

Coordinating Accessories – Wearing a belt or choosing a handbag that echoes the color or trim of your boots helps them make the transition; for instance, a wide tan leather belt over a girly frock paired with tan riding boots would work well. The Foley + Corinna Mid City Tote might also be the perfect versatile accessory.

Just because the weather is warming up doesn’t mean you have to give up your boots. You just need to think about new ways to wear them.

1. Frye Carson Shortie Boots $318
2. Alexander McQueen Cutout Leather Ankle Boots $995
3. Quiksilver ‘Islington’ Shirtdress $78
4. Foley + Corinna Mid City Tote $444
