Well this really comes as no surprise. It wasn't a matter of if, just when. The public relations nightmare that became Jake is officially closing (Read our article "Less Than Jake" from last summer here). Guess that's what happens when you don't pay your vendors and leave a financial mess in your wake…bad karma comes to bite you in the arse. We feel horrible about some of our favorite boutiques in Chicago closing due to the economy, but Jake's closing was of their own (un)doing.
According to TimeOut Chicago and some of our sources, Jake's last standing boutique in the Gold Coast is closing April 3. The store’s two other locations in Lakeview and Winnetka were closed a while ago. Co-owners Lance Lawson and Jim Wetzel say the lease on the space is ending and they feel it’s time to close this chapter on their lives. One would also hope it is to leave town with their tail between their legs, but Chicago isn't that lucky.
We hear this is not the last we will see of Lawson and Wetzel. Even though the pair were also blasted in the New York Times, the partners are working on a pop-up store this summer. They’re also planning to open a concept store on the North Side of the city sometime this fall. Neither store will feature clothing, though so we can't imagine what they will carry exactly.
In the meantime, if you feel like picking at the remains Jake is starting to take gradual markdowns (30%–70%) on merchandise today.
