I was “seeing†someone. We went out on four or five dates. I thought it was really going somewhere and it seemed like he thought so too. Apparently not. He went the typical “player†route and stood me up last night. We had a planned date. We were supposed to meet around a certain time and though we never agreed on a particular time, it was pretty set in stone.
Then he disappeared. No phone call, no text, no Facebook message. I have absolutely no idea what happened to him and still don’t. I’m hoping he’s not lying dead in a ditch somewhere. If he was really a man, he would have called me and said, “Look I don’t think this is going somewhere, I’m not interested.†Though it would have hurt, at least he would have been honest. But no, I got nothing.
So what did I do? I searched for my most sophisticated, vibrant outfit, called my friends and went out for a night on the town. I had to. I was dying inside.
Ladies, I’m sure we’ve all been through this. But when it happens — here’s a surefire way to get over it. Find your best attire, play the role of your most favorite celeb, and make a statement. Here are the best ways to feel like a star:
I’m not sure why, but embellished shoulders always make me feel cooler then everyone else in the room. I don’t know if it’s because of the trendy or the height—or the fact that I feel like no one can overpower me. Guess celebs like Lady Gaga and Rihanna have this in mind, because they wear them all the time. My favorite look as of late — Whitney Port’s blue embellished shoulders dress at the Ecco Domani Fashion Party in NYC. Of course, it was also a tribute to the late fashion maestro Alexander McQueen. She looked like a million bucks!
Bold color is an amazing way to keep up your spirits when you mood feels completely black. Color is also sweeping the red carpet and it’s one of the easiest ways to make a statement or keep an outfit alive whether it’s a solid jewel tone like Lea Michele in her daring Catharine Malandrino at the Screen Actors Guild awards or a patterned shift dress like Jessica Alba’s Proenza Schouler. I loved the way 90210’s Jessica Lowndes pairs a brilliantly beaded color jacket over a ruffly black dress. Emmy Rossum is happily coupled, yet her colorful dresses of choice are perfect for the playful single girl on the prowl — a blue and white print sheath at a store opening and an icey blue Christian Siriano sheath at a fashion party.
One of the best ways for me to feel good about myself is to look sharp! That means well-cut trousers for a powerful but ultimately feminine look or a sharp, structured blazer that plays up an outfit, without letting one lose the sexiness of a strong woman. I always feel like I can command a room when I wear a pencil skirt with a button down blouse or pin-stripes with a vest, even when I’m just out to a party and not in the office. We’re guessing celebs like Heidi Klum and Victoria Beckham feel the same since they’re always in these looks. Still, Rachel Bilson is the best example of this by far, always upping the ante just a little bit by adding statement accessories to her structured boyfriend blazer or adding the cutest satin shorts to complete the look.
If you’re not up for the structured menswear, you can always play up the fact that you’re a woman. Who doesn’t love a good ruffled dress or frills on the collar to make herself feel 100 percent female? Stars like Katie Holmes and Kim Kardashian never forget this, always surprising us with femme details to an otherwise straight-and-narrow outfit, whether it be a frilly pink dress over jeans and under a cardigan or a floral skirt a top a plain white tank. There’s nothing wrong with showing the world you’re a romantic woman — especially when you’re ready to find a new love.
