Another magazine shift…
Carol Smith, formerly senior VP and chief brand officer of Elle Group, will join Conde Nast starting April 26. Smith is set to be VP and publishing director of Bon Appetit and the Gourmet brand, a newly created position at the company.
Elle has been doing very well lately. With its ever presence on MTV's "The City", its original sponsorship on "Project Runway" and an upcoming coffee table book, Elle has been reaping the benefits, even garnering more advertising pages than Vogue.
Smith explained her reasoning for leaving Elle at such a high point: “My contract was coming up for renewal and I never saw myself going anywhere. I love Elle and thought I’d retire here, but then I had a drink with Tom [ Florio ]. He said, ‘Could you ever see yourself doing for food what you did for fashion with Elle?’ I had never even thought about it….Then I started to think, you know, what’s the difference between food and fashion? Not much."
Elle Group VP and publisher Anne Welch will be acting chief brand officer until a replacement is found.
