Creative arts lovers must watch Fear No Art Chicago! This show "discovers the artists behind the art" and airs Friday, May 7th on WTTW Channel 11. I was lucky to get a sneak peek at the screening party which was held at Columbia College on Tuesday. The executive producer and host, Elysabeth Alfano, is near and dear to Second City Style since she was one of the talented Chicago designers we featured and worked with when we had an online store. Her accessory line of scarves and wraps were made by fair-trade artisans. I since learned that she is an art historian, has taught Marketing Visual Arts at Columbia College, and has done improve for The Second City, so she has all the right stuff for the job as host of Fear No Art Chicago! It takes an artist to understand artists, and Elysabeth brings out the best of the artists that she interviews.
The first episode featured artist success stories in a 30 minute show. In the premier Elysabeth talks to blues and folk musician Nicholas Barron, tries on fashions with designer Lauren Lein, and takes and participates in the the kitchen (or laboratory?) at MOTO with chefs Omar Cantu and Ben Roche. Elysabeth got right into theme of the entire show with Nicholas when she asked him to explain in his words, what makes an artist an artist – and how he knows if a song "sucks." But you'll have to watch to find out the answers! Lauren Lein gives some important advice about what it is like to be a fashion designer in Chicago, and talks about the benefits. Of course, I hope there will be more fashion design interviews on the show in the future. And the sculptural food designed by the creative chefs at MOTO will make you curious, amazed and hungry!
Join Elysabeth as she goes behind the scenes, where the public is never allowed, to discover what is involved (mistakes and all), in the making of sculpture, painting, fashion, music, theater and food of all types in the back studios, kitchens and stages of Chicago’s artists.
Fear No Art Chicago airs on WTTW11 on May 7th at 8:30 PM, May 12 at 10:30 PM and May 23 at 4:30 PM.
