We here at Second City Style are not usually in the habit of reviewing and recommending other fashion blogs and print magazines. Let's face it, we want you reading us! However, every once in a while one catches our collective eyes. Such is the case with Above Magazine. I received a copy last week and placed it in the baby's stroller hoping to be able to get a chance to thumb through it. He thankfully fell asleep on one of our walks to the park, so I sat on a park bench and started leafing through my Spring/Summer issue.
This 40th Anniversary of Earth Day celebratory issue features cover model Elettra Wiedmann shot by renowned art and fashion photographer Bettina Rheims. In her interview, Elettra uses the opportunity to talk of her commitment to the environment and to set the record straight on her own identity (she is Isabella Rossellini’s daughter).
Also in the issue, Tierney Gearon traveled to Florida’s Everglades to create an original series of her signature double-exposure photographs. An accompanying story by Kirk Nielsen delves deep into the puzzling reality of the Everglades, North America’s largest subtropical wilderness.
There is also a candid conversation with the always thought-provoking iconic designer Philippe Starck in which he calls into question his his relevancy in light of the issues facing humanity
yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
On a lighter note, the timeless Carol Alt shares her views of natural and health-conscious living (she only eats raw), while supermodel Helena Christensen invites readers into her “secret garden” in a corner of Greenwich Village.
The photography is stunning and the content thought provoking. I found myself sitting there for over an hour reading this impressive magazine. Above magazine is published quarterly by Centoria Limited with a cover price of $10.00.
