When one thinks of Jil Sander, they hardly imagine bursts of print and bold splashes of color. On the contrary, the Milan-based company has long been known for its clean minimalism and immaculate tailoring. But all that is about to change with the label's latest venture, a new casual collection called Jil Sander Navy which is planned to launch for Spring 2011. “We are targeting all kinds of categories that aren’t completely
represented in the main collection,” said Alessandro Cremonesi, chief
executive officer of Jil Sander. “There will be some surprises in terms
of prints and colors. But they are done the Jil Sander way.” So ready or not Jil Sander lovers! Here comes magenta, orange and kelly green interspersed with the label's signature neutrals of khaki, black and navy. As for prints, Cremonesi promises stripes, graphics and even a beachy print inspired by the work of 17th-century artist Abraham Mignon. And the collection's silhouettes will run the gamut from simple (think: bias cut jersey T-shirts with canvas house oxfords and gladiator sandals) to structured (crisp white shirtdresses). And all pieces will be constructed from Japanese or European fabrics with an emphasis on
light weights in cotton voile, micro twill and nylon with techno

Although the company is looking to promote the collection in Europe and Asia, the U.S. is the priority at the moment. “The U.S. market has been really receptive,” said Cremonesi. “And it’s been requesting such a project from the collection. We’re more interested in if the price of the casual line will result
in a repetitive buy,” he said. “ It’s not just price positioning we’re
looking for but also the lifestyle we wanted to interpret.
” Jil Sander Navy, which will retail from $125 for a T-shirt to $1,000 for a dress or trenchcoat, is priced well below the main collection. American retailers and media will get a sneak peek of the collection today at the Jil Sander New York showroom. The rest of us will have to settle with these images for now.
