On Friday, Second City Style readers were asked to test their knowledge in identifying which food and beverages "Sizzled" in aiding a radiant complexion and which ones "Fizzled" in adding ZERO benefits to your skin. How did you measure up? The answers are highlighted in pink below:
1. Consuming candy and other sugary snacks.
Glucose begins to rush into your bloodstream, causing a process called glycation – where sugars attach to proteins to form AEG's. These molecules naturally build up as you get older, but the more sugar you eat, "The AEG's cross-link with collagen and elastin fibers, making the normally resilient tissues weak or inflexible."
2. Consuming red wine.
Red wine is packed with antioxidants, which aid in fighting against damaging free radicals.
3. Consuming dark chocolate.
Dark Chocolate contains about 70% of cocoa which is good for you. Cocoa's Flavonol's – another antioxidant, increases blood flow and supplies the skin with more oxygen with helps in keeping the skin hydrated.
4. Consuming milk.
Research has shown that if you are prone to acne, drinking milk and consuming other dairy products does not offer assistance in keeping your pores clear from breakouts. "Androgens found in milk may add to a drinker's own level of androgens, which are associated with oily skin and acne."
5. Consuming spicy foods.
If you have rosacea, fair or sun-damaged skin, eating spicy foods can lead to a red blotchy complexion. "UV exposure weakens blood vessel walls. If you skin then repeatedly flushes, which swells vessels, they may not be able to shrink back down."
6. Consuming greasy or fried foods.
Although consuming greasy or fried foods have not been linked to the cause of acne, most health nutritionist would agree that in order to maintain an overall healthy body and digestive system, one should eliminate all greasy goodness from their diets.
