Today brought the possibility of a savior for Chicago's fledgling fashion scene. After two significant blows into the past months—the closing of GenArt and the resignation of Melissa Gamble—people about our toddlin' town have been wondering what's to become of us. Now Nolcha, a fashion business platform for independent designers and retailers has announced it will be carrying on the legacy that GenArt began 16 years ago. Founded by Kerry Bannigan and Arthur Mandel, Nolcha aims to assist Chicago's  fashion entrepreneurs through the help of educational, online and event resources. “We feel Nolcha has become the go to resource for the independent fashion industry,” says CEO Bannigan.

The company plans to perk up the city's fashion community through various business methods ranging from video fashion business education to online Look Book services that connect retailers to designers. They also seem to understand the power of events. In addition to the idea of a citywide Independent Retail Week, they also hold Nolcha Fashion Week in New York where independent designers are featured exclusively. In the their official media release, President Mandel explains," “We maintain established partnerships with global companies including Coca-Cola, Paul Mitchell, Aveda, and many more respected brands. These high profile sponsors are key elements to success in this area along with Nolcha Fashion Week: New York which runs concurrent with New York Fashion Week (September 13 – 16) and provides great timing and exposure,”

So will Nolcha be the caped crusaders that can rescue us from the fashion doldrums? It remains to be seen but we sure hope so. Check out more about the company at
