W magazine has had quite a year so far. First, they receive a new editor in chief in Stefano Tonchi, former editor of T: The New York Times Style Magazine. And now, while W has been undergoing rampant changes both outside and in, a camera crew has rolled in and begun filming everything for an upcoming documentary on the mag's September Issue. Sound familiar? Indeed it seems we may have seen this premise before when R.J. Cutler's popular behind the scenes portrait of Vogue, 'The September Issue', came out last fall. So is there really enough fodder for a whole other film on the subject? W seems to think so.
The staff has been keeping details of the magazine's redesign with Tonchi under wraps, which is set to debut in September—the biggest month of a magazine's year. A rep for the magazine told New York Magazine the release date for the film will then be
"around late October," but wouldn't provide many more details. So perhaps the story behind their new look will be enough to drive the crowds to the box office. We know we're already intrigued. As for the next tome that decides to put itself on film—well, let's just hope they decide to spotlight another issue.
