After more than two years of operating without a CEO, Barneys New York has finally settled on a worthy pick. The luxury retailer Barneys New York has just announced it hired Mark Lee, the former chief executive of the Gucci brand, as the company's new chief executive officer starting September 1. Mr. Lee had apparently been in talks with the company some time ago about the position, and was contacted again recently. After the retailer received approval from its owner, the Dubai investment fund Istithmar World Capital, Mr. Lee was invited on board, ending the arduous, two year long search.
In a statement, Mr. Lee said Barneys is "synonymous with luxury and
style and I am confident that together with the strong Barneys team we
can take the company to even greater prominence." Mr. Lee brings with him an impressive resume, first as global president and chief executive of Gucci Group NV for
four years, and earlier as CEO of Yves Saint Laurent.
His 25 years career in the industry also included roles at Saks Inc. and at
the Giorgio Armani and Jil Sander brands. And since 2008, Mr. Lee has been
a consultant and sat on the boards of several companies, including Tory Burch, as well as a recent appointment to the board of
online luxury retailer Yoox SpA. Needless to say, Mr. Lee "will have a lot of free rein in running this company," according to a company source. Based on his extensive luxury-goods experience, "he knows
all the vendors," the source added. "That will help keep Barneys in its
niche." Our prayers have been answered! Barneys is back on the rise!
