Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’11. Backstage at Georges Chakra

September 10, 2010 • New York Fashion Week Spring '11

I had the pleasure of meeting Goerges Chakra before his Spring 2011 RTW Show at Lincoln Center on September 10, 2010. A fan of his coquetish, James Bond girl looks that I saw at his fall 2010 collection, I was excited to see what he had in store for spring. He was so polite and willing to answer any question I had (with his thick accent). He has been designing for 20 years and seemed very passionate about his collection.

SCS: I loved your Fall 2010 collection! What will we see today on the runway?

Absolute_towers_CanadaGeorges Chakra: You will see fitted dresses, with silk straps and sculptured shapes. Many are bias cut for walking. I was inspired by the Absolute Towers.

SCS: Your designs are very sexy yet you always have some longer gowns and long sleeves. It seems like your designs can be worn by women of all ages.

Georges Chakra: Yes, women from age 19 to 75 are my clients.

SCS: What about color and fabrics for spring?

Georges Chakra: You will see stretch satin, satin charmeuse, jersey lame. The colors are neutral colors, black, white, silver gold and bright colors like violet, chartreuse and turquoise.

SCS: Who has worn your designs on the red carpet?

Geoges Chakra: Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez and Carrie Underwood… are just a few.

Meanwhile, the models’ hair for the show was getting slicked back into loose fishtails while the models looked bored while checking their iPhones. It was only 11:30 a.m. and the show was at 2:00 p.m. As for makeup, I spoke to M•A•C’s world-renoun makeup artist, Terry Barber!  He told me the look for the show is an edgy glossy, 80’s look with a deep mahogany eye shadow. “I was inspired by those old magazines that when I was a kid I may find on a gas station floor!”
