The coveted September issues of our favorite fashion mags have hit news stands, the New York-originated “Fashion’s Night Out†has become an international success, and Fall Fashion Month 2010 is officially under way. As we spend the next four weeks watching Spring flounce its floraled confections down the runways, that can only mean one thing: Fall has officially arrived.
If you’re anything like me, you’re ready to rid yourself of tanks and open-toes and to style yourself up with something fancy. I want to dive back into the wonderful world of layering, boots, jackets and all things fall. All summer long, I’ve been following the trends, eagerly awaiting the inevitable temperature drop so that I can finally put all of my bookmarked style links and torn magazine images into action.
Rewiring your style sensibilities can be a little overwhelming when it comes time to transition your wardrobe, so I’ve culled from the best of the best to bring you this fall’s top trends. In a season that’s all about going back to the basics (with a forward sensibility, of course), challenge both your closet and your style to a little refresher. Putting your best foot forward never looked so good.
The Tailored Suit
Ever since Yves Saint Laurent threw the world into a sartorial tailspin with his Le Smoking in the 1960s, the pantsuit has come a long way. From pinstripes to wide legs, from ankle-hugging cigarette shapes to the over-sized boyfriend blazer, the pantsuit has shape-shifted into infinitous proportions – owning its role as one of fashion’s most transformative garments. After a few seasons of disparate sizing (big-big-big on top, skinny-skinny-skinny on the bottom, and vice versa), designers have come full circle and are returning to classic standards of exacted tailoring. Meant to enhance and celebrate the natural shape of the female form, a precisely tailored pantsuit is a must-have staple for this fall. Whether or not your work day takes place from 9-5, it’s time to embrace your body and put some power into your shape. Camel, black, or metallic – experiment all you want with color. This fall, the fit’s the thing.
Everywhere in which fall trends are bringing clothes back to the body, this season’s coats are moving into the spotlight with unabashed defiance. Voluminous capes are back, in all shapes and sizes, and there is no look that can’t be accomplished with this fall’s statement-making staple. Looking for something more tailored and traditional? Go for an hourglass shape with a chic, patent belt. Feeling the volume effect? Try a rounded egg shape with your favorite skinnies, and a shearling-lined boot. As they always say, first impressions are the most important. Your coat is this season’s most vital investment – impress away.
The It Bag
The ultimate accessory, a good bag is the essential final touch to any well-styled outfit. Although often waging heavy competition against shoes in the luxury goods department, bags are back in a big way, and their classic roots (the YSL Muse, the Hermès Birkin) are ready to earn a lifelong spot on your stylish little shoulder. While embellishments are making their mark, leave those to your boots and baubles. This fall, invest in a bag that transcends time and embraces a lifelong appreciation of style. Which bag is your Muse?
Color It Camel
Designers have painted this fall camel, and it looks good. Your tailored pants? Camel. That incredible coat that has everyone stopping you on the street? Camel. And the fur embellishments attacking as much surface area as possible? Camel, again. Keep it cool and chic with plum and pine green accents, but everything else? It’s all about the camel, baby.
