Celebs Wow On The White Carpet At The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

September 13, 2010 • Magazine

The Taylor Swift/Kanye West spar through song weren't the only things that wowwed at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Taking place smack dab in the middle of New York Fashion Week, the MTV VMAs are always the place for risk-taking celebs to make crazy fashion choices and pull together statement-making looks.  This year was no exception.

From Lady Gaga's numerous wardrobe changes to Cher's iconic "If I Could Turn Back Time" bodysuit, this year's MTV VMAs screamed fashion rule breaking like no other!

But before we get into the over-the-top trends, let's see what the most stylish fashionistas of the VMAs had in store for us.

Best Dressed

Lady Gaga in Alexander McQueen

What VMA Best Dressed list could be complete without the uber-stylish Lady Gaga to take the reins? While she had various costume changes throughout the night that were rather overwhelming, her red carpet look was stunning! What a brilliant way to pay tribute to a daring designer who chose to go where other fashion designers could not venture.  The exquisite gown was from the late Alexander McQueen's last collection. She topped it with a feather mohawk and colored hair.

Ashley Greene in Giambattista Valli

Take from Twilight star Ashley Greene–the best style statements are made with just a hint of risky and lots of class.  She wowed in a black and white Giambattista Valli dress with a romantic lace bodice and bow-tied white bubble skirt.  She added Ofira gemstone earrings to the mix.

Karina Smirnoff

Something about this elegant number in a sunny color screams class! Just like Ashley Greene, it's those simple pieces with one statement making detail (in this case the canary yellow color and sky-high heels) that make all the difference. I loved the DWTS dancer's look last night.

Stephanie Pratt in Nicole Miller

Heidi Montag's sister-in-law often dresses as unflattering as the plastic surgery ridden reality star but in this instance, I'm liking the slithery gown in a paisley print.  Pratt has said she never wears long gowns so this Nicole Miller maxi dress is a step up in the elegance department.

Victoria Justice in Jill Stuart

There's a slight trend going on in this best dressed category. It seems simple and stunning win the race! The best minidresses are the ones with just a hint of something embellished a la Karina Smirnoff, Ashley Greene, and now Victoria Justice.  The 17-year old Disney actress completed her loko with Christian Louboutin peep toes.

Other fashion winners:

Shaun Robinson

Lo Bosworth in Gabriela Cardena

Skin Tight Leather

Hard to believe that this could actually be a trend, but yes, more than one star this ultra form fitting material to MTV's big event.  In some cases, it didn't look half bad…in other cases, it looked atrocious!

Emma Stone in Emilio Pucci

Rosario Dawson

Nicki Minaj

Oh the horror!

Beads and Embellishments

Katy Perry in Marchesa

Florence Welch in Givenchy Haute Couture

Hayley Williams in Miu Miu

Miranda Cosgrove in Elise Overland

Sofia Vergara

Silver and Sequins

Sahara Dika

Audrina Patridge in Isaac Mizrahi

Selena Gomez in Reem Acra

Lauren McKnight in Legend

Black is So Back

Coco Rocha in Zac Posen

Maria Menounous

Bethenny Frankel

And now for the horror of horrors! (And believe me, they outnumber the best dressed!) The ones that should have stayed at home…the worst dressed!

Worst Dressed

We know she's trying to be all, like, disheveled rock & roll ballerina princess like, but like, did she really have to wear those f-ugly combat boots? Somehow she also found ways to state her wealth in this mess with blingy Neil Lane jewelry and a Jennifer Behr crystal headband.

Roxy Olin

Where's Whitney? At least the reality star and budding designer always looks classy and appropriate.  Not so for her BFF and People's Revolution partner in crime Roxy Olin, who came to the VMAs dressed in an ill fitting lace sheath and fringed skirt getup.

Ciara in Givenchy Haute Couture

While Givenchy could potentially be all magic, Ciara's take on it is just not.  Her posture is lagging and those Givenchy white wedges are just not right on her frame.  This R&B singer tried to be a winner and instead came out all wallowy.

Taylor Swift in D&G

Yes, I know what you're going to say.  This country princess can do no wrong.  But where she lacks in the fashion department, she makes up with maturity. I think this starlet was trying so hard to look Old Hollywood glam and grown up that she came out looking sallow.  Better luck next time dear, though I do like your Rita Hayworth curls.

Other Woeful Worsts

Eva Marcille

Cher circa 1989

Ke$ha wearing Home Depot?

A worst dressed list isn't a worst dressed list without the guys and gals of Jersey Shore on it! Actually, I don't think the boys look so bad, but why do the girls have to wear tight fitting shifts when they don't have tight tummies? Everything is hanging out…

The worst by far though…

The paisley prowess that is Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi!
