While it will be months before April showers bring May flowers, the Spring/Summer 2011 fashion shows offered a tempting respite from the cold and darkness of the fall and winter seasons. Moreover, if you live in the southern half of the globe, spring is just starting and you’re ready to shed some layers. So how can you take your warm weather inspiration and make it work right now? Here are 5 trends you can rock right now and next year:

Asymmetry: One shouldered or one sleeved dresses, sometimes with intricate draping like this dark purple silk-satin and crepe Helmut Lang number look hot with black opaques and booties now, and equally chic with bare legs and sandals later.

Slouchy Sweaters: They make an ideal layering piece now and will be a casual chic way to top off an ensemble once it’s warmer out. Invest in a drapey, slouchy cardigan like this charcoal cable knit style by Vince in a neutral color and you’re bound to wear it long after 2010 is over. Swap the belt for a thick leather one of your own for a different look.

Slinky Tops: There’s nothing like a fluid jersey top for making a sexy but understated statement. Great under jackets or the aforementioned sweaters as well as on their own, these day to night pieces are seasonless. There are some excellent options on the racks this fall, including this ruched halter with gold chains at the neckline by Sky.

Seasonless Sandals: Unless there’s a thick blanket of snow on the ground (in which case cozy boots are probably the best option), some sandals look just as chic with tights as they do with bare legs. The key is to choose a substantial style with thicker straps that covers most of the foot, like these Seven for all Mankind ombre platform sandals.

Fringe: Whether it is trimming a jacket or a pair of boots, fringe will continue to be popular well into the next season. This Nanette Lepore twisted fringe mini-bag is a fantastic piece to pick up now and wear for the next two seasons, and the warm slightly metallic gray hue is neutral enough to work with fall, winter and spring outfits.
