This summer was all about fabulous headwear. Fedoras, buckets hats and beanies abounded were turning heads (so to speak) throughout the season. And though the temps have begun to drop, the trend of sporting terrific toppers doesn’t have to end. Quite the contrary, fall and winter hats can add that much needed punch of panache to spice up an otherwise humdrum ensemble. Whether you fancy a confection in cashmere, wool or fur — pulling a cold weather cap down snugly over your ears is the ultimate statement in both fashion and function for these chilly upcoming seasons.

Great American designers like Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren have dispelled the myth of the skullcap. Once paired with sailors, and, more recently, skater boys, the quick fix to a cold winter day has gotten a serious style makeover. Kors sent the thick knit hats down his fall runway, pairing it with elegant sportswear. The effect is that the casual cap can be quite effectively dressed up when paired with a trench, lady coat or even classic pea coat. Though there are no doubt countless styles of this hat to choose from, Tomas Maier’s cashmere and mohair beanie is a luxe option that will last many a blustery night while keeping its shape intact.
