Designer Dish. Star-Studded Fetes Honor This Year’s Notables in Design

The always fab Simon Doonan will host this year's FGI Night of Stars Gala again

Last night's National Design Awards at Cipriani on 42nd Street in New York had both guests and passerby all aflutter, from the spools of ribbon suspended from the 60-foot ceilings installed by artist David Stark, to the celeb sightings of such honorees as Cynthia Rowley, Behnaz Sarafpour and Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

And if you think that's a star-studded fashion fete, wait till you hear the line up for next week's Fashion Group International Night of Stars gala. Themed "The Globalists,” the event couldn't have had a more global and dapper host than Simon Doonan, who returns to honor the role. But the staggering lineup of presenters and winners is really an undecipherable mish-mash of designers, celebrities and politicians that would easily give us whiplash from being all in the same place.

Jennifer Connelly will present Nicolas Ghesquière of Balenciaga with the evening’s Superstar award; Richard Gere will give Tod’s Diego Della Valle his Brand Visionary award, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg will be on hand to present Evelyn Lauder with her Humanitarian award. W magazine’s much talked about new editor in chief Stefano Tonchi will give Akris’ Albert Kriemler his Star award, while mother-and-daughter duo Anna Wintour and Bee Shaffer (!) will do the same honors for Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. Pierre Cardin will receive his Legend award from Marisa Berenson; Calvin Klein will do the honors for Frédéric Fekkai in Beauty, and, perhaps best pf all (but I may be biased) “Mad Men” star Elisabeth Moss will give the Entertainment award to the show's influential costume designer Janie Bryant. Whew! Forget the Emmy's, Grammys, and the Met Gala—this is shaping up to be the next big party of the year!
