Jean Paul Gaultier visited Canada late last week to announce a major career retrospective exhibit, which will be featured next year at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Marking 35 yeas in fashion, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk,” is slated to run in Montreal from June 17 to Oct. 2 2012 before traveling to the Dallas Museum of Fine Art (Nov. 13 to Feb. 12, 2012) and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, de Young (March 24 to Aug. 19, 2012.)
The exhibit will showcase some 120 ensembles, many of them them couture, alongside sketches, photography and audio-visual elements. The AV pieces will include clips from films the famous French designer has costumed—by directors including Luc Besson, Peter Greenaway and Pedro Almodovar—coupled with videos of collaborations with choreographers and pop stars, including Kylie Minogue, Madonna and of course—Lady Gaga.
The museum said the exhibition will be organized among five JPG themes: Paris, Fusions, Multi-Gender, Eurotrash/X-rated and Metropolis, each including an integral part of the household name that is today behind everything from fragrances and men’s wear to home furnishings. Nathalie Bondil, museum director and chief curator, said what attracted her to Gaultier as a subject over other couturiers is his “open-minded vision of society, a crazy, sensitive, funny, sassy world in which everyone can assert his or her identity.” So if you're able to get to Montreal, Dallas or San Francisco when the exhibit drops twp years from now, this seems like one exhibit that should not be missed!
