Chicago Events: The Lanvin for H&M Collection Release

November 22, 2010 • Events, Shopping

The best of the best (who could make it) were out as early as they could Saturday morning to sit in line and wait for the grand release of the Lanvin for H&M collection. I was one of the lucky few who chose to come out and wait in line at the H&M on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. With price points from $9.95 to $249.99, you couldn't afford not to!

I got there at 4:45am and there was a red carpet in front of the stores for customers. It was amusing because they were already people camping out and sleeping in sleeping bags in line… on the red carpet! Talk about dedication!

Getting there two hours earlier doesn't seem too crappy now, huh?

It was a bit quiet for the first hour or so. As the morning went on, more and more people starting popping up. Luckily, Starbucks was on hand to give out free coffee and croissants. Super cool. By 7:30am, many of the line waiters were becoming antsy. Just in the nick of time, H&M employees starting handing out colored wristbands for 15 minute shopping times.

My early morning dedication paid off. I was the 84th person in line! I was even one of the first hundred that got a free goodie bag. Score! Walking in, I went straight to the men's department upstairs (the men's department didn't set aside colored wristbands). Oh. My. God.

These people + Lanvin + no visible security = riotous

The men's department is what happened at the Jimmy Choo for H&M release. Men and women were just snatching, pushing and grabbing haphazardly anything they could get their hands on. It was complete insanity. The store manager even had to come up and tell people to behave themselves! I had to stand back and pray for the best that the women's shopping experience fared better than this.

By this time, my 9:20 slot was quickly approaching. Every 20 customers had 15 minutes to shop the collection. Then, employees would re-stock what they could for 5 minutes after the group's shopping period ended. While the previous group shopped, others in my group made game stratgeies. I ended up in a good group because lest the riot mob upstairs, we were pretty courteous of helping each other out.

The H&M staff was amazing. They had all the answers and were making sure we could all find everything. If we needed another size of something, they were right on the case.

Luckily, I got most of what I wanted. I scored the brown fur jacket, a t-shirt, the leather and pearl necklace, the big flower and pearl necklace, and the diamante belt (but could be a necklace)! Pretty sweet. The only thing I was sad about not buying was the sunglasses (they sold out by the time they got to the third group!).

But for the haul, I'd say it was a pretty good run. You can even check out some of our updates on our Twitter page for Second City Style. Sooo, …when's the next release?
