Congratulations America, we couldn't be prouder of of you! Despite temps dipping below freezing and bumper to bumper traffic pretty much everywhere, you all got up, got out and did some serious spending this holiday weekend, causing WWD to state this morning, "The consumer is back — at least for this holiday season."
Lured in by dramatic price reductions, especially on all the latest breakthrough electronics, shoppers spent a hefty chunk of change in everywhere from department stores to fast fashion chains to luxury boutiques. In addition to gizmos and gadgets, the apparel industry also saw a huge jolt, especially shoes, boots, cashmere sweaters, cold-weather items, jewelry and accessories. That's what we fashionistas like to hear!
The experts did caution, however, that the Black Friday period shouldn’t be regarded as a true standard for the rest of the holiday shopping season, and noted that the 2008 holiday season was a bust even after a big Black Friday. “There’s just no guarantee,” acknowledged Terry Lundgren, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Macy’s Inc. But Black Friday, Lundgren added, “felt good, right out of the box.”
So need we say more? Everyone get out there, do your part to improve our economy and get shopping!!
