Today's headlines have been literally buzzing off the page, er, screen, with the growing rumors that Blake Lively is the next face of Chanel handbags. E! Online reported that a source said Lively was just in Paris shooting an ad campaign for the French luxury house alongside the Kaiser himself, Karl Lagerfeld, which will launch early next year. So if these reports are true, are we ready to see Lively splashed across every media outlet clutching an insanely chic Chanel bag?
In theory, the choice does make sense. As a regular front row face at Chanel runway shows, Lively has shown up on more than one occasion on the arm of none other than Anna Wintour herself. Wintour has treated Lively to star on a few different covers of Vogue and is reportedly the one who introduced Lively to Lagerfeld. New York Magazine even speculates that Wintour would have supported Lively as a choice for the campaign from the start, and we all know her approval means a little something. Plus, Lively's coveted and flagrantly unrealistic wardrobe on her hit series, "Gossip Girl", has seen more than its fair share of Chanel.
Yet, even though she looks good on paper, I personally think there is just nothing really about Blake Lively that screams Chanel. The quintessential blonde California babe, Lively is young, fresh-faced and pretty. But so what? Slap her in a Cover Girl campaign then, to appeal to the "Easy, Breezy" masses. Her look says nothing of high fashion, elegance or sophistication—three characteristics that define the very legacy of Chanel.
Recent Canel ads breed a much darker, sensual and more edgy look with former faces like Audrey Tatou, Lilly Allen, and Kiera Knightley. Each embodies a luxe, European sense of glamour that Lively just doesn't have. And to pair her acting prowess with her predecessors is just an insult to the lot. A splashy CW series does not a moviestar make. I personally would not have chosen her for the ad campaign, but I guess we'll see how well she fares when if and when the ads debut next year.
