So I finally saw "Black Swan" last night. Immediately roped in by the trailers, I expected an epic, gripping, no-holds-barred cinematic event—and I was not let down. Natalie Portman plays ballerina Nina Sayers, a sweet girl subjected to the true ugliness of the competitive ballet world when she's picked to be the principal dancer in her company's version of Swan Lake. The duality of the role of the Swan Queen—she has to be both the innocent White Swan and the seductive Black Swan—tears away at her psyche as she preps for the role, resulting into one of the most dramatic onscreen metamorphoses I've ever seen. Yet Portman retains an unparalleled sense of elegance and grace throughout. She is truly, this year's standout star for this film.
And the New York Times seemingly agrees, as they picked Portman to be on the cover of this Sunday's New York Times Magazine in a blonde wig. The cover was shot by Sølve Sundsbø for a story on actors who defined cinema in 2010. Even in the black and white stills, she embodies an aesthetic of suffering akin to the movie, one that only comes from getting exactly what you want.
But her acting prowess is not the only thing Portman is getting lauded for these days. Amid all the "Black Swan" hype, Dior announced today that that Portman, who was named the new face of their fragrances this past summer, will star in the upcoming Miss Dior Cherie campaign, which is slated to hit TV and print this coming March. Famed director Sofia Coppola will direct the video commercials herself, just as she did for the former Miss Dior Cherie ads that starred Maryna Lynchuk in 2008. Portman—who is currently dating her "Black Swan" co-star and New York City Ballet principal male dance Benjamin Millipied—will also have a hot male model in the campaign wih her. The model, whose identity has yet to be revealed, reportedly made the 29-year old say she felt "like a big old cougar." Congrats Natalie! You're having an amazing year!
