A scary thing happens to me if I have time to kill before an appointment and I am near a Sephora. I zone out in a land of makeup and beauty. Such was the case last Friday. I was 20 minutes early for my hair appointment and found myself inside the Sephora 2 blocks away. That is like letting a kid loose in Kids R Us. Dangerous! I have been obsessed with D&G perfume of late and red lipstick which tends to happen to me pretty much every year around Christmas.
Several years ago I bought the classic 'looks good on everyone' MAC Russian Red lipstick, but I can't find it. It's not bad, but I'm a hard red to fit. I look horrid in blue reds and better in orangy reds. But if it's too orange I don't like it. So here I am again a few weeks before the holidays on the quest for the perfect red for me.

A couple of weeks ago I was in a Sephora (see a trend here?) and picked up a NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella pretty much untested and based solely on Kat Bremhort's rave review.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil In Cruella, $24 (scarlet red)
While it applies phenomenally (which is quite an accomplishment because everyone knows red is hard to expertly apply), the color isn't exactly me. It is supposed to be a scarlet red, but looks like a pink red on me, which is a little jarring.
So, with some time to kill on Friday I asked one of the experts at Sephora help me find the perfect red for my skintone. Hey, I don't claim to know everything and have no problems asking for help especially when it comes to beauty products. First she tried to sell me some $34 YSL lipstick which I won't spend on lipstick nor did it look like the right color for me. I was getting worried I had asked the wrong expert for help. Then she lead me over to the Sephora Collection lipsticks, which I never considered checking out either.
She immediately picked up a classic bright red lipstick appropriately named "The Red" and told me it's usually gone as they constantly sell out of the shade, but had just restocked. This time I tried in on in the store and it looked pretty good, but that lighting is not the best. So for $12 I took a gamble. I wore it in broad daylight on my way home from having my hair done and noticed a few men check me out. Don't tell my husband, but considering it has been a long time since that has happened (about two years ago before I was pregnant), my day was pretty much made. But the icing on the cake was when my husband walked in the door and said I looked hot! I think I'm keeping red in the act past the holidays this year! I obviously found the right one.
