I don’t know how to wear lace without looking too extreme or overdone. What crosses that “too much lace†line? I don’t want to buy an overload of lace so do you have any suggestions on pieces that can go from day to night?
Very Truly Yours,
Lace Me Down
Dear Lace Me Down,
This seductive, peek-a-boo textile can be a slippery danger zone and if done recklessly you might find yourself steering into Sleazy Lane instead of Chic Avenue. From pumps and hosiery, to trench coats and dresses, fashionistas are embracing lace for this winter season. Picking the right lace, style and cut of the apparel will help to emulate red carpet status and not Christina Aguilera in Burlesque.
I said peek-a-boo for a reason. Let’s not bear all in a dress with gaping sheer cutouts that show off a tattoo you mistakenly got done on your ribs in college. Choose the right areas to reveal a little extra like shoulders, hemlines or even full backs. White lace for the winter holidays is a given but don’t be afraid to go traditional with black and navy. With a detailed and busy fabric, simple is good.
Blazers aren’t going anywhere and a lace blazer in the color of Essie’s “Ballet Slippers†is a must. A black blazer is typical and may be a little gothic, but one in a dainty light pink will kiss any outfit with innocence. From a casual day outfit with skinny jeans and a loose-fitted white tee, a blazer can move on to cover your designated LBD for the night. Don’t forget about the accessories. Shoes, handbags and all things that accent an outfit should be considered. Now it’s your turn to commend this fabric and with it highlight your sexy silhouettes.
