Natalie Portman in Black Swan

It's been out for weeks and the chilling ballet drama, Black Swan is still at the top of the charts and on everyone's lips. People can't seem to get enough of star Natalie Portman's downward spiral into madness after achieving her lifelong goal as principal dancer in her company's production of Swan Lake. Now, the only things getting as much buzz as Portman's performance (and that of her co-star Mila Kunis) are the gorgeous ballerina confections designed by costume designer Amy Westcott and the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte.

And while Black Swan may have been Rodarte's debut into film design, other designers showed their own versions of ballerina-like looks on their Spring 2011 runways. In addition to ballet fare on the runway, many houses also played off of the dueling themes of light and dark that are prevalent throughout the film. So which came first, the tutu or the ballerina?

Chanel Spring 2011

Ever the visionary, Karl Lagerfeld paired sweetness with a dark, edgy underbelly in his Chanel Spring 2011 runway collection, which featured feathered plumes, uneven hems and shredded fabrics. The late Alexander McQueen successor, Sarah Burton, featured dramatic marabou feathers in her premiere collection and even understated J.Mendel created spring pieces sporing fabric panels that resembled wings.

The New York Times predicts the ballerina/swan-like theme will trickle down to retail come spring, noting brands like Lipsy of London—a line sold a Bloomingdale’s, ASOS, and BCBG Max Azria all set up to start selling tutus. American Apparel has also been touting ballet-looking activewear, similar to what Portman wears in the film. So do not be surprised if, as the frost starts to thaw, fashion's boldest and brightest will start stepping out in toe shoes and tutus!
