Hooray for a new year of shoe collaborations! Nine West is doing the honors of kicking off the festivities with announcing two new capsule collections in 2011, compliments of designers designers Sophie Theallet and Giles Deacon, in conjunction with Nine West's creative director Fred Allard.

The two collections are the premiere collaborations in a new Nine West initiative called Shoelaborations. The label will work with up-and-coming designers, artists and musicians to ensure a constant source of freshness for their designs. “The rationale really is finding people with a great niche and following, and working with them to bring Nine West into their worlds,” Stacy Lastrina, chief marketing officer at brand parent The Jones Group, told WWD.

Debuting May 1st, the Sophie Theallet for Nine West collection will include shoes, accessories and handbags inspired by both the designer’s Parisian upbringing and her current New York lifestyle.“For the collection I designed my own stripe print, which you will see interpreted on a ballet flat, a raffia wedge and a double platform sandal. I also designed little straw bags with charms representing icons of France,” Theallet told Footwear News. The shoes will retail for approximately $79 for flats to $109 for a double-platform sandal or espadrille, keeping " in step" with the average Nine West price point.  Deacon’s collection is slated for fall ’11, though the details of the styles have yet to be released. Nine West also said it is in talks for partnerships for 2012, but declined to reveal names.

“There’s a lot of competition in the footwear market, and the consumer is looking for the next hot new designer and trend," Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst for The NPD Group Inc., said. "Designer collaborations fall into the category of unique branding, and a designer can make a splash [in the space] with a brand like Nine West behind it."
