Summary: Rebecca Minkoff's muse Charlotte Kemp and her boyfriend Sean Lennon performed live for her first ready-to-wear runway show. Their small band, 'The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger', played one song before the models proceeded to walk the runway, and what a beautiful song it was. I actually played the feed on her site again…not really to review the clothes, but to listen to that haunting song ("Dead Meat") a second time. Their cover of Serge Gainsbourg's "J'Taime Mon Non Plus," was perfect for the model procession.
It seems it is much easier for a clothing designer to successfully design a line of diffusion handbags than a handbag designer designing an extraordinary line of clothing. The mediums are totally different. Therefore, I was a tad skeptical, but intrigued. Rececca Minkoff is already so well known for her distinctive line of handbags. So I was curious, how good could her clothes be? It was actually one for the shows I was most looking forward to.
While it is apparent that the "Minkoff Girl" is an amped up Bohemian city dweller, the collection overall did not seem very unique or original. A fox vest? Cute, but saw that last year. A leopard print jumper? We've seen that too. Leather shorts? You get the idea. The line looked like it was designed by about 6 different designers with 6 varying points of view. However, that doesn't mean some of the looks weren't totally wearable. The black and bone shearling jacket will sell well, as will the skintight almost legging-like wool pants with snakeskin patches on the knees and the Night Liberty print chiffon dresses. The jackets, coats and trenches were standouts as were obviously the bags and the shoes.
Do I think the line will sell? Yes. While it was decidedly safe the collection had just enough edge to make you want to check it out. I guarantee there will be more than one piece that you will want to compliment your Rebecca Minkoff bag.
