Summary: This season was my first Tommy Hilfiger show and I was excited to be able to finally experience the runway of an iconic American designer. Though I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. Hilfiger has long since had the market cornered on all things preppy, polished and above all, plaid. But I soon found out that any chance of pigeon-holing him into any of those categories went flying out the window, or should I say, stalking down the runway last night.
Inspired by the girlfriends of rock stars in the 1970's (which is a pretty cool muse to begin with), Hilfiger started with the menswear-inspired trends of the time, opening with grey wool herringbone suits, vests and overcoats that turned into pinstripes later in the show. He was able to keep the look from getting predictable, however, by incorporating his own signature elements. Just when you thought you knew what would come out next, he threw boho chic into the mix with knit ponchos and long printed skirts and also a wool overcoat with a fedora and silk pajamas.
Fabrics ran the gamut in unexpected shapes like a gleaming trench coat in navy bonded cotton and rubber and a to die for (!) burgundy wrap skirt in pony hair. Call me naive but I was surprised by the range of looks, brimming with one exquisitely tailored separate after another. I guess this is what makes you a legend for over four decades: the ability to wow while still making your clothing accessible. And my wide-brimmed fedora is off to you Mr. Hilfiger: I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next.
