Summary: Despite a presentation that was more than a little bit disorganized (models were perched near the back of an extremely crowded Gallery Nine 5 on Spring Street, where only a small portion of the crowd were able to experience the clothes), former Project Runway contestant (season 6) Althea Harper's Fall collection is simple, yet well-made, with a focus on evening/going-out wear, with the inclusion of a few beautifully draped harem pants and oversized slouchy silk blouses.
Keeping her palette clean with various hues of black and grey, Harper's designs have a strong sense of attitude that is apparent in more than just the styling. Sexy cutouts amongst both dresses and leggings either left bare, or shrouded in lace, exude a rock 'n roll sensibility that works well with the burlesque appeal of patchworked corsettes and thigh-high leather boots.
When I stepped backstage to take a peak at hair and makeup, I was pleased with the overteased 1960s hair and shimmery gunmetal smoky eyes, which added a playful appeal to Harper's bad girl aesthetic. These elements, alongside a few chic separates, allow the collection to move easily from day to evening. A gorgeous printed chiffon blouse leaves a desire to see more variance — especially since this piece, which is unlike anything else in the collection, is such a success. Although a bit more variety in shape and color would have been interesting, Harper's concept shines through as she more than certainly takes her Project Runway history to task.
