In what has quickly become a favorite among Chicago's fashion community, the Chicago Fashion Incubator welcomed their six new Designers in Residence to the neighborhood last night at their 2nd Annual Launch/CFI event. Held in the pristine space of The 900 North Michigan Avenue Shops, the party doubled as both an introduction of the new designers that will spend the next year learning the trade of developing a fashion business, and an invitation into the CFI pop-up shop which hosts collections by previous Chicago Incubators for a limited time.
Our intro to the six new designers was set up as a vibrant presentation, with models standing on elevated platforms and rotating every so often. This allowed guests to get up close to the featured designs and see the fabric and pattern firsthand, something I always enjoy about presentations as opposed to runway. The designs were as varied and diverse as we expected, from traditional African patterns to rich, modernistic tailoring. The designers themselves perused the crowd, stopping occasionally to pose with their model for a photo or answer a question about their piece.
Over in the pop up shop, CFI alumni offered up style advice on their collections and provided news of developments in their labels like a new studio space for Miriam Cecilia Carlson or a jewelry line for Ashley Zygmunt's label Zamrie. Executive Director of the CFI and local designer Lara Miller and Kiran Advani Anderson from the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture were also on hand to answer questions about all the exciting upcoming events. And speaking of which, there are a ton! For the next five weeks, the studio space and pop up shop are going to be chock full of runways shows, presentations, meet and greets and trunk shows that Chicago gets to be a part of! Check out the full list of events, plus more dish on the new designers at Refinery 29 Chicago and meet us at the 900 Shops to support our local fashion community!
