From across the pond, Topshop/Topman made it's first official splash in Chicago yesterday. Set upon the Chicago skyline, the Rooftop at the Wit hotel held the scene for some pieces of the upcoming Autumn and Winter collection.
Topshop will bring the whole shebang, including accessories and makeup. One special makeup line will be exclusive to Chicago, aptly named 'Windy City". The Topshop line consists of five different collections in its main line, each with a different feel and atmosphere:
Psychobilly, an 1960s update take on womenswear as menswear with sleek tailoring and modern twists. Because of it's heavily tailored pieces, I believe that this will be a success in the Midwest region. Faux furs, silhouettes and prints keep this collection feminine while leather accents and 'dad' sweaters bring it full circle.
Thrift, a combination of the laid back theme of the 1960s with a neater finish from the 1940s post-war Britain. This line takes more of an "eclectic dressing-up of girly vintage-ispired pieces" with pops of bright prints and delicate beadwork.
Glamrock was my favorite of all the collections. Besides the fact that it has the most interesting range of colors and fabric choices, the extravagant look of what any rockstar should be. Based on the glamorous look of the 1970s, casual garments are given the luxe treatment: hi-tech coating on skinny jeans and oversized hot pink shaggy faux fur coats. My favorites were a accordion pleated black leather skirt and textured bright blue green ankle-cropped pants.
On the other side of the spectrum, the line Bavaria had more of a everyday feel, and will probably have the most success in Chicago's treacherous winterland. With a modern and luxurious take on khaki parkas and patchwork sheepskin, cable knits and heavy velvets will defend against the harsh weather.
One of the most special of the collections is the Unique line. This season travels back to the elegance of the 1930s, drawing on the culture of of luxury and status of the industrial age. Bod prints and silky fabrics give the overall sleek and refined feel of the collection. One of everyone's favorite piece was the two piece backless navy silk suit that actually had a print that said "Chicago". No one could stop gushing over it!
All that being said: I CANNOT WAIT until Topshop opens later this year. Opening September 1, it's bound to be a fun fall season in the Windy City this season.
