Well, it’s official. With Memorial Day and a sweltering 90+ degree day behind us, summer is on the horizon. No matter that spring passed us by in a chilly, soggy blur, it’s time to move on to bigger and better things—namely pool parties, street festivals and lots and LOTS of beach days. But while we’re slathering the SPF onto our skin, let’s pause a moment to think about what’s taking the brunt of the damage on those bright and sunny days: our hair! UV rays, chlorine and salt water are all factors of a fabulous summer and yet,  are all crippling to healthy and shiny hair.

Luckily, the solution to preserving lustrous locks throughout the coming months can be found right here in Chicago’s River North neighborhood at George the Salon. Nestled in the fourth floor of an unassuming Hubbard St. building, George the Salon holds court among some of the city’s poshest bars and restaurants. Yet not about to be outdone by its neighbors, the space reflects the same sleek and stylish vibe, boasting exposed brick walls, plush leather chairs and a panoramic view of our gorgeous city.

Inside George the Salon

I was able to witness all the salon had to offer one (uncharacteristically) warm evening when George the Salon opened its doors to some of the city’s most notable names in beauty and fashion to allow us a better idea of the salon’s pre-summer pampering services. With my rough and tumble curly locks, I chose the Pureology Conditioning Treatment. I was led to the salon’s shampoo station in the back given the most luxurious cleanse, condition and massage by my shampoo master, Anna. The Pureology HydraCure Hair Masque that was picked for me is designed to hydrate dry locks with natural butters like shea, jojoba, mango and avocado while the signature Pureology AntiFade Complex retains color and adds a brilliant shine. After my treatment had set under the dryer and thoroughly rinsed, I could already feel the difference.

Getting blow-dried by stylist Kelda

I was then able to indulge in a relaxing blowout and style, compliments of super stylist Kelda. As she blow-dried my newly replenished locks, she told me that George the Salon has been in operation for about 3 years and that the salon’s namesake, George G. has had an ongoing relationship with Oprah’s Harpo Studios. Kelda said she herself had styled dozens of celebrities, athletes and famous names who had appeared on the show over the past few years— a clear testament to how talented the George the Salon team is!

I received my own personal proof with a bouncy, shining mane that felt as good as it looked. A couple weeks later and I can still feel the difference in texture as the temperature starts to climb and heat and humidity gear up to do their worst.  I’m now ready to face the upcoming season “head on” (get it?) and not a moment too soon. Many thanks for the the much needed help from the friendly and professional staff at George the Salon. One visit with them and I realized you can start looking forward to  summer instead of planning how to avoid it!
