Just when we thought we couldn’t yearn anymore for The Row, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen’s high end uber chic apparel line, they had to go and add handbags. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the twins explained their reasoning behind branching out into handbags. We are such bag people,” Ashley said simply. The seven piece collection is an accessory manifestation of The Row’s equal parts urban and edgy aesthetic. Crafted from fine leathers and skins, the twins are once again proving—as they have with their clothing lines—they are not messing around in the fashion biz.
“We wanted there to be multiple options in the collection so you aren’t stuck with one style; there’s a purpose to every bag.” Styles include the Day Luxe as a kind of chic update to the briefcase, the Classic Shoulder as a cross-body messenger and the Twin Mini, which features a long strap and a different skin on each side.
“We didn’t want too much branding; we didn’t want an It bag,” says Mary-Kate of the new line. Instead, as Harper’s Bazaar notes, the girls wanted a set of complementary accessories for their fur-laden, neutral-toned fall apparel collection. The leather, alligator, ostrich and lizard handbags will be sold at Barneys New York and specialty boutiques starting in July for fall. From this first look, we’re hedging our bets that the bags will be an instant success, as they do channel the same high end grittiness as Alex Wang and Opening Ceremony.
