New York fans of the French lingerie and swimwear brand Eres (and we know there are many) will celebrate today with the news that the label is setting up shop in Barneys New York. The retailer has set aside a 220-square-foot area to house a full range of Eres lingerie for fall-winter 2011 and swimwear for 2011.
Though the Barneys venture is the first in-store space for the lingerie and swimwear label, Eres currently operates 18 boutiques worldwide including ones in Beverly Hills and Palm Beach, Fla., and 14 in Europe. They also boast eight units in France, three in Italy, two in Spain and one in Belgium. There are also seven in-store shops at major department stores in France, one shop at Selfridges and another at Jelmoli in Zurich. Eres needed a new New York presence after closing two stores in Manhattan last year — one on Madison Avenue and one in SoHo.
“It’s a really big deal for Eres,” said Celine Kaplan, spokeswoman for the Chanel-owned French brand. “It was a very long negotiation. Barneys will be the exclusive retailer for Eres in New York.” Fixtures in the store within a store will echo the environment of freestanding Eres boutiques, featuring silver chrome and blonde wood fixtures similar to the luxury leather Valextra space at Barneys.
Once a sole swimwear label, Chanel bought Eres in 1997 and in fall 1998, helped launch a full-fledged and upscale lingerie collection which today, has become a popular an integral part of the Eres name. Eres will debut in Barneys New York by mid-July.
