Call it the Amy Winehouse or Lindsay Lohan defense. John Galliano insists he’s not a hateful bigot, bit merely a drunken, pill-popping addict. According to the NY Post the embattled designer told a Paris court yesterday he has no memory of his anti-Semitic rants and blamed booze, barbiturates and sleeping pills for his “black outs”.
Last February 24, the 50-year-old British designer was caught on video spewing hateful anti-semitic rants directed at cafe patrons saying, “People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f- -king gassed.” Later, he was recorded by an onlooker declaring, “I love Hitler.”
The designer blames his addiction to the 2005 death of his father and the 2007 passing of a trusted aide. Galliano said he didn’t tell police about his addictions because “I was in denial. I was still taking those pills and alcohol.”
Even though the court played the video of one of his diatribes, Galliano claims the man on the tape wasn’t really him. “These are not views that I hold or believe in,” he said. “In the video, I see someone who needs help, who’s vulnerable. It’s the shell of John Galliano. I see someone who’s been pushed to the edge.”
The apologetic designer has since received treatment at rehab facilities in both Arizona and Switzerland.
Not only has he lost his job as head of Christian Dior, if convicted, he could face up to six months behind bars and ordered to pay $32,175 in fines.
