Miuccia Prada knew she had done right when she picked young actress Hailee Steinfeld for the Miu Miu fall 2011 campaigns. The 14 year old powerhouse was picked as the first high profile Hollywood face to be featured in a Miu Miu ad for some time. The Italian house has previously worked with the likes of Kim Basinger, Camilla Belle, Lindsay Lohan, Vanessa Paradis and Kirsten Dunst, but has opted for models instead of actresses for their recent campaigns. Steinfeld marks a return to the trend, having been selected for her “unconventional elegance and and her ability to carry off the grown-up and elegant silhouettes,” according to WWD.
Indeed no young actress can define the term “wise beyond her years” better, between a smashing breakout performance in last year’s epic film ‘True Grit” and an undeniable sophistication and eloquence off screen. Steinfeld exudes such a timelessness in her dark hair, olive features and lanky frame, that Prada decided to go with a high drama Forties “film noir” theme for the fall campaign. Miu Miu recruited photographer Bruce Weber for the very first time to shoot the ads, set up around train tracks and rich foliage outside Miami.
The result is a sort of dream-like story, with Steinfeld at different times both the heroine and the damsel in distress. The decadent fabrics in her ensembles are punctuated with a sparse print or a sculptural heel. To add to the Forties-like mood, Steinfeld’s hair is pulled off her face in a style reminiscent of the era. The images just broke in Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera and will be in international magazines by July. 14 years old and already a cover girl.
