Coco Chanel will always stay in our hearts and minds as a legendary French designer, but according to new research there was more than tweed suits on the designer’s agenda.
Hal Vaughan, an American historian, has written a new book entitled “Sleeping With The Enemy: Coco Chanel’s Secret War” revealing details of Chanel’s affair with a German spy. The book also accuses Chanel of being a member of the German Abwehr intelligence organization. This isn’t the first time rumors have surfaced about Chanel’s secret loyalties, but this is the first to cite evidence.
Vaughan did not start off his research trying to oust Chanel but with one piece of paper he came across with an accusation, he unveiled a whole secret he didn’t even know was there to find. “Then I really started hunting through all of the archives, in the United States, in London, in Berlin and in Rome and I come across not one, but 20, 30, 40 absolutely solid archival materials on Chanel and her lover, Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage, who was a professional Abwehr spy,” Vaughan said.
The House of Chanel was quick to respond with a statement, “more than 57 books have been written about Gabrielle Chanel … We would encourage you to consult some of the more serious ones.”
What do you think about the accusations? Does it make you love Chanel any less?
