Hurricane Irene’s Bluff
Though the Texas-sized tropical storm, Hurricane Irene, was one of the worst to ever sweep the eastern seaboard, not much damage was caused. Most major New York stores said they expect to reopen as normal Monday, further disruption is likely as airports, subways and commuter rail systems in cities such as New York and Washington, D.C., and into New England assess the damage and attempt to return to normal schedules. Weather research specialist Planalytics estimated that the storm would translate to the loss of 80 million shoppers for retailers over what would normally have been a busy weekend.
At least 11 people died as a result of the storm, and flooding was widespread throughout New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and surrounding areas.
Rebecca Minkoff’s New Pieces
Rebecca Minkoff is one of the fastest growing brands in the industry, forging full speed ahead into “lifestyle brand” territory with three new categories: jewelry, eyewear, and cold weather and scarves. The line will make its debut at the designer’s spring runway show on Sept. 12 during New York Fashion Week, alongside current offerings which include a full range of handbags, apparel and footwear, a category that’s also growing.
“As we’re growing our accessories business, there is so much opportunity, especially with the major department stores. There’s often a void between a more generic brand and a luxury brand, and we see product openings to leverage our aesthetic within those categories,” Minkoff said. “We can offer great value and design and we fulfill a lifestyle vision. They’ve [department stores] highly encouraged us to go into these categories, and we think we can take some good market share.”
A GaGa Wedding ?
This could just be another stunt… and no one would really be surprised. Buzz is building that Lady GaGa and her beau Luc Carl so many are placing bets on the “upcoming” wedding gown, including Lady GaGa’s own designer sister, Natali Germanotta. Germanotta is a favorite at 13-8 right now. Other likely designers are Nicola Formichetti, Gareth Pugh, Atsuko Kudo, Donatella Versace and Vivienne Westwood.
Josie Natori is Hitting Target
The Josie Natori for Target collection will be the discount retailer’s first stand-alone designer brand of intimates. Categories will include sleepwear, loungewear, bras and coordinating undies, and lingerie items such as camisoles and chemises. This will also be the Natori Co.’s first foray into the mass arena. The Josie Natori for Target collection will be sold at most of Target’s 1,755 stores, and select styles and colors will be available at target.com and also be available for two installment deliveries during key gift-giving holidays: Oct. 30 to Dec. 22 for Christmas, and Jan. 1 through Feb. 22 for Valentine’s Day. Prices for the collection will be $9.99 to $34.99.
“I am so excited to be able to translate our aesthetic and sensibility to Target and make my products more accessible to mainstream America,” said Josie Natori, chief executive officer of the Natori firm.” With the Josie Natori for Target collection, I wanted to maintain my point of view and, at the same time, the high quality of my designs. As you can see, prints have always been a forte of Natori, and to me there is no difference, because all of the aesthetics and quality are the same for this collection.”
